The Versatile Drawstring Bag: Styled 3 Ways for Every Occasion
Apr 02, 26
If you’ve been following my sewing journey, you know I’m all about creating pieces that are both functional and stylish, and this drawstring bag is no exception! It’s the perfect beginner-friendly project, and I’m excited to show you how it’s become my go to accessory for everything from running errands to attending special events.
This bag isn’t just easy to make, it’s incredibly versatile too. With interchangeable long and short straps, you can dress it up or down for any occasion. In this post, I’ll share how I styled the same bag for three different looks: casual day, dinner and drinks, and a special event.
You can grab the free pattern and follow along with the step-by-step YouTube tutorial at the end of this post.
I’ve included plenty of photos featuring the bag in three different colorways and fabric choices to give you loads of inspiration. Whether you're sewing it for yourself or simply looking for new ways to style it, let’s dive in!
1. Casual Day: Running Errands & Coffee Runs
We all know how busy mornings can get, but with the right accessories, you can throw on a few pieces and still look effortlessly cool, even during a rushed coffee run. This drawstring bag is the perfect companion for those days when you want to keep things simple yet chic.
For a casual, laid-back look, I paired the bag with loose parachute trousers and sneakers. The soft, drawstring design of the bag sits comfortably against your body, making it ideal for running errands or grabbing your coffee.
In this style, I opted for the long handle and used a cotton-polyester fabric in a light blue. The neutral tone complements nearly everything in my closet, making it a versatile addition to any casual outfit.
2. Dinner & Drinks: Dress It Up for a Night Out
Who says a simple drawstring bag can’t be dressed up for a night out? This bag transitions effortlessly from day to night with just a few style tweaks.
For this look, I went with the neutral grey bag (made from polyester) and swapped the long strap for the shorter, chic handbag handle. This instantly gives the bag a more sophisticated vibe. I paired it with a mini dress and low heels, transforming the bag from “casual” to “chic” without feeling over the-top.
What I love most about this style is how the bag can be worn on your wrist for an effortlessly cool look. It’s just the right size to carry your essentials (phone, lip gloss, maybe a small wallet), and it keeps things minimal, so you don’t have to deal with a bulky purse.
3. Special Event: Weddings & Occasions
I couldn’t wait to style this drawstring bag for a special event, and it worked beautifully! It’s the perfect accessory for adding a bit of elegance to any occasion.
For this look, I chose a soft cream cotton sateen fabric and paired the bag with a hand-crocheted blue dress and heels. The drapey, minimalist design of the bag contrasts beautifully with the more formal outfit. Plus, the versatility of the cream color makes it a perfect match for any occasion.
The best part? The bag is lightweight, so you don’t have to worry about lugging around a heavy purse, but it still adds a perfect touch of elegance to your look. Whether it’s a wedding, garden party, or other special events, this bag works beautifully for any occasion.
