An Effortlessly Chic Tie Knot Bag (Free Sewing Pattern)

Mar 02, 26

Every now and then, a project surprises you.

It’s simple on paper. Just a few pattern pieces. Clean lines. A knot.

And then you finish it… and it looks like something you’d find hanging in a small boutique , structured, intentional, quietly beautiful.

This is that project and I’m so happy with the outcome.

Today I’m sharing the full tutorial for this elevated Tie Knot Bag, along with a free downloadable pattern so you can make your own.

Why You’ll Reach for This Bag Again and Again

This is one of those pieces that quietly works with everything.

It’s easy enough to carry during the day - to work, to coffee, tucked under your arm while running errands. But in the right fabric, it can just as easily work for evening. Linen feels relaxed and organic. Suede feels modern and elevated.

The silhouette is soft but sculptural. Minimal, but not boring.

The zipper adds that practical element we all need. It keeps your essentials secure while still keeping the design clean and unfussy. Nothing feels overdone.

You can make it neutral and timeless, bold and statement-making, or sew a few to rotate with your wardrobe.

It’s the kind of bag you’ll actually use, not just admire once it’s finished.

Fabric Choices That Elevate It

Because the shape is clean and modern, the material truly becomes the focal point. Whether you're working with fabric or exploring leather bag making, this design adapts beautifully to your chosen material.

It works especially well in soft, thin suede, leather, or faux leather for a more structured finish, as thicker materials help the bag hold its shape. I created this bag in two different suede weights: a thin 0.7mm suede (the dark brown version) and a thicker 1mm suede (the light brown version).

Both are equally beautiful, and you can see in the photos how the bag’s structure and drape change depending on the fabric weight.

A few favorites for this style:

  • Soft, thin suede
  • Soft PU leather
  • Light denim / Canvas

I recommend choosing something soft and malleable enough to work smoothly with the curved zipper. In the tutorial, I walk you through sewing the bag fully lined with a zipper for a clean, high-end result -  inside and out.

If you’re sewing with thicker fabrics or leather, test your layers first to make sure your machine handles them comfortably. And if you’re purchasing leather hides, bring your printed pattern pieces with you so you can check sizing and work around any natural markings.

The goal is enough body to hold its shape -but still enough flexibility to let the curves and knot sit naturally.

You can watch the full step-by-step tutorial above, where I walk you through the entire construction process - from fabric selection to tying the knot so it sits just right.

(Print at home, assemble, and you’re ready to cut.)
