DIY Lace Skirt Tutorial: Draft & Sew Your Own Pattern

Jan 15, 26

Ready to take your sewing skills to the next level? This DIY lace skirt tutorial is perfect for anyone who wants to draft their own skirt pattern (and sew it too!).

I’ll walk you through the entire process of creating a lace mini skirt tailored to your measurements, from pattern drafting to finishing touches. If you love sewing projects that are both creative and precise, this one is for you.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Skirt:

Pattern Drafting Made Simple: Follow your waist measurement and my measurement chart to draft a skirt pattern with ease. You’ll end up witha beautifully fitted lace skirt (and the satisfaction of making it from scratch).

Intermediate Sewing Project: This DIY skirt tutorial takes you step by step. It’s ideal for confident sewers looking to experiment with
pattern drafting.

Chic & Wearable: Using lace gives the skirt a refined, feminine feel. You can easily modify the pattern for length or switch fabrics to create a unique variation.

Drafting your own pattern allows for a perfect, personalized fit, while the lace adds a romantic touch. Pair the lace skirt with a fitted top or blouse for a polished outfit, or style it casually with a tee for a modern, relaxed look.

This project is a great opportunity to develop your sewing skills and get creative, whether by trying different fabrics or experimenting with the length. If you enjoy YouTube tutorials that go beyond ready-made patterns, this one will inspire your next sewing project.

What You’ll Need:

  • Lightweight lace fabric with a lace border
running down the selvedge (the skirt incorporates the lace border in the hem),
about 1.5-2 meters (130 cm wide).
  • Lining fabric. I like to use lightweight rayon, about 0.3 meters (150 cm wide)
  • 3cm wide elastic, your waist measurement + 5 cm
  • Your measurement guide to follow as you draft your pattern.
