THE FOUNDER
Born and raised in New Zealand, Tessa Smith currently lives in Vietnam where her namesake label, TESS JEAN is based."Fundamental, is an ethos to create and make consciously. As soon as you out-source production you lose control over sustainable and ethical practices so I chose to sew everything myself. Considering wearability with timeless design, sourcing sustainable fabrics and sewing to order ensures I can make high quality, ethical pieces that I am emotionally invested in. It’s important to acknowledge the true value of clothes and the time and processes that go behind the make of each piece. I hope to encourage more conscious consumerism.
After living in Vietnam since 2015, launching a resort wear brand was a natural progression. Life in Vietnam is a bit like the feeling of being on vacation. It’s undeniably hot, all year round, and there’s that sense of escapism and optimistic energy that one gets when on holiday. I wanted to create pieces that embodied that notion of leisure, relaxation, and appreciation for sun-drenched destinations whilst with a conscious mindset. Thus TESS JEAN was born. Timeless, trans-seasonal styles in sustainable, breathable fabrics. Designs that can be effortlessly worn whilst on vacation and as everyday wardrobe essentials. An aesthetic of relaxed sensibility and unpretentious attitude, produced in an ethical and sustainable way."
